REFLECTION
Experience
During my first semester in the BDCM course, I took the Typography module
for the first time. As a newcomer to this subject, I started by
familiarising myself with what this module is about and how it works. At first, it felt overwhelming because everything was so new to me.
However, as time went on, I found myself becoming more and more interested
in the module. Each task brought its own set of challenges and valuable
lessons, encouraging me to improve my skills and deepen my understanding
in Typography. In addition, Mr. Max gives us feedback every
week and guides us step by step, which is very helpful for my work.
This module was quite flexible in its approach, as our lecturers
encouraged us to express our unique styles and freely explore ideas
through the given tasks. However, they emphasised the importance of
balance, ensuring we didn’t overdo or overdesign our work. Overall, this
module taught me a lot about typography, and I thoroughly enjoyed every
learning opportunity along the way. I am grateful to Mr. Vinod and Mr.
Max for the valuable knowledge and advances.
Observation
Typography can be combined with many things to give it a different look,
and I began to see typography as a mixture of art and structure. Even
the smallest details, such as spacing or alignment, can change the outcome
of a design and destroy the balanced of it. Tools like grids and guides
was essential to ensure consistency and accuracy, it helps to make the
overall look more neatly and clean. Seeing my classmate's work also
gave me new perspectives. Their unique interpretations of the same brief
opened my eyes to the diversity and imagination of typography, which
reinforced the idea that there is no single “right” way to approach a
design task.
Findings
Typography is an evolving process that requires us to constantly try out
different ideas to find the best ones. Experimentation and exploration are
as valuable as the end result, as they lead to unexpected insights and
creative breakthroughs.
