LECTRUES

Production

- Production stages in filmmaking can broken down into 3 phase:
  1. Pre-production
  2. Production
  3. Post-production
Pre-Production:

- Refers to all the preparation necessary before filming. It's everything happend between financing and production, includes tasks such as writing the script, creating storyboards, casting actors, scouting locations, designing sets and costumes, and hiring crew members.

Production:

Actual filming take place. Team will work together to capture all the footage with plans and preparations made during pre-production stages as a guide. Involves coordinating with a large team of people and managing a complex schedule.

Post-Production

- Edit ans assmbled the footage into a final product. Includes cutting, arranging scenes, adding music and shound effects, colour grading, and visual effects. It is a time consuming process as it requires carefull attention to detail.

INSTRUCTION

EXERCISE

Exercise 01

Sir Martin had introduced us about the module and what do we need to do in Project. Besides, he introduce us about Zach King, he is known for his innovative “digital approach”—a combination of stop-motion animation, visual effects, and clever editing to create magical, viral-worthy shorts.

We need to watch Zack King videos and list 3 videos, explain how/why the style, art direction, charcter design or visual effect attract people.

1. The Storybook Destination

- This video cleverly blends reality with the visual effects of the world that is organized. The video immerse the audience in the pop-up book, with layers of 2D/3D elements, creating a realistic atmosphere. The seamless transitions such as stepping into the world of book combine perspective, stop-motion and editing techniques to make him seem walk from the real world into the world of the book.

2. What if This Really Exited

- The visual effects are achieved through compositing, hidden editing, and practical pops. The most impressive thing is the seamless time synchronization and physical interaction between real and digital elements, making the ipad look like a real portal connecting the two worlds. The video's style, clar art direction, and invisible editing techniques make the magic show appear natural and smooth, rather than deliberate.

3. How Zach King Gets Away With Doing Graffiti

- This video clever fusion of street art cultural and his signature "visual magic" The video blends perspective tricks, hidden edits, and practical props. It's as if Zack King prepared a canvas or panel that fits the graffiti perfectly, when he flips the canvas, the wall still look clean. The smooth transition between real spray paint and the illusion of an "invisible wall" makes this magical moment seem natural and real. Overall, the creative art direction and seamledd visual effect the video's create a vivid moment that captures the exitement of street art and the magic  of visual deception.

Exercise 02

Mr. Martin gave us a tutorial about how to do a simple flicking fingers VFX effect in Adobe After Effect.

Figure 1.0, Exercise 2 import video

After we import the video clips, we need to organise the clips in tracks and start removing the green screen and use Roto Brush tools to crop the figure out.

Then the VFX effect was done.

PROCESS WORK

Editing Process:

After we finsihed our shooting, we separate our work to 2 part, one is editing the video and adding VFX effect, the other work for the sound effect and colour grading. However, when we tried to edit the video clips, we found that some scenes were too shaky or didn’t make sense, so we decided to shoot again and again until we found the right scene.

I was doing the editing part and VFX part. My first idea for the used of VFX effect was the teleport effect with a snap.

Figure 1.4, Editing Process 1

I first imported all the video clips in PR and then started to arrange the video clips in a smooth way. Then I import the ripple effect video in the part and apply to the part where I need the ripple effect.

Figure 1.5, Editing Process 2

The ripple effect is with a green screen, so to apply it in my video, I used the Ultra Key effect and used the eyedropper to remove the green screen and place to the chair when I tap the chair. The ripple effect shows that I’m just an imaginary friend, I don’t really exist, and I can’t actually touch or interact with anything in the real world.

Figure 1.6, Editing Process 3

Additionally, I added a bubble imagine effect, where show that what I think in that time. I used a elipse shape and clipping mask the images on the shape, then apply a blur effect at the edge of the shape.

Figure 1.7, Editing Process 4

Figure 1.8, Snap clip

I filmed myself snapping my fingers in the same position but at five different places. Then, during editing, I cut and combined those clips so that each snap instantly switches to a new location. This creates the vision that I’m teleporting to five places with just one snap.

Figure 1.9, Editing Process 5

Besides that, I edited the disappearing scene using two video clips and opacity. One clip shows me sitting and sighing, and the other is the same scene without me. I placed the sighing clip on top of the empty one, then slowly reduced the opacity from 100 to 0 at the end to make it look like I faded away.

Lastly, I add a black scene with text "Imaginary Friend" as the ending.

After my groupmates finished the color grading and sound effects, I did a final check on the color grading and added a few more sound effects.

FEEDBACK

Week 11: Sir said the witch idea change to imaginary friend better and specific the work that the girl was doing.

Week 13: We showing sir our first draft of the video, sir said the story flow is ok already just need to finish the VFX edit.

Week 14: We show sir our work with the edit part finish, sir said ok.

REFLECTION

Experiences:

Throughout this project, I experienced how to shoot a short video by applying the knowledge we learned in lectures, especially about camera angles. We combined all the exercises and assignments we had done and applied them in this final project. At first, we needed to create a storyboard based on the topic we got. From there, we developed a theme and storyline. My group received "The Moon" card, and the topic was "What we want the most now." So, we decided to create a story that reflects our current feelings and emotions. To make the video more engaging, we tried to give it a comedic tone.

While shooting, I felt really embarrassed and awkward because we filmed at TRX Mall and KLCC, where it was super crowded. That affected our performance in the video, and we weren't very satisfied with the result. After reviewing the footage during the editing stage, we realized it could be improved a lot. So, we decided to film everything again on another day. With the experience from our first attempt, we were able to shoot everything much faster and more smoothly the second time. This project not only helped me understand the technical side of video production but also pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me a memorable hands-on experience.

Observation:

During this project, I observed how important it is to plan clearly before starting the shoot. The storyboard and storyline helped us stay on track, but in real situations like filming in crowded public places, many unexpected things happened. For example, when we filmed at TRX and KLCC, we realized how the environment and people's reactions could affect our performance and confidence. It made me understand that even if we prepare well, the real shooting experience is very different from what we imagined. We also learned that reviewing and reflecting on our first shoot was helpful. It showed us what we needed to improve, especially in camera angles, stability, and acting. In terms of post-production, I observed how small VFX effects like ripple or fade-out can make the story more meaningful and emotional. Even though these effects are subtle, they added depth to our narrative. It also showed me that editing is not just about cutting and combining, but also about storytelling and emotion control.

Findings:

Through this project, I found that creating a short film is not only about technical skills like camera angles or editing, but more about teamwork, planning, and adapting. I realized how different the real shooting process is compared to our initial expectations, especially when filming in public places. We thought we were prepared, but things like crowd, noise, and awkwardness affected our performance a lot. Still, it was through these challenges that we learned the most. Re-filming gave us a clearer direction, and we could apply what we learned from the first attempt. I also found that editing plays a huge part in shaping the mood of the video; even small effects made the emotion stronger. This experience taught me to be more flexible, open to feedback, and that it's okay to redo things to get a better result, even it takes longer time.
