Week 03

We met our client in this week and her name is Ms. Youle, she gave us a try for her products and free each of us one pack of their coconut water drink.

Notes for Ms Youle of what she said about her company and brand:

  • The business started from ugly coconuts, so their first goal was to save ugly coconuts because even though they look ugly outside, inside of the coconut has really fresh and good taste.
  • “Kami” means god in Japanese so Coconut God. But Kami in malay is ‘Us’.
  • They first started with “WB fresh” coconut brand before starting WellB.
  • Ugly coconuts are rejected so they are saving ugly nut
  • They don't judge the coconut by how it looks like because they taste good inside
  • During rainy season, yield will go up
  • She stated that Cocokami’s product all have no added preservatives or sugar unlike drinks such as 100 Plus especially during tournaments.
  • After 2 weeks plucked from the tree, the coconut get rotten already.
  • They up cycled coconuts to: Jelly, pudding, drink, beverages, meat, etc.
  • They try to prolong the shelf life of the coconut products
  • People don’t take much fiber today, especially kids, so they want to make coconut snacks/drinks, desserts which have no preservatives to help solve this issue, since coconuts have a lot of fiber.
  • They are already exporting to Hongkong & Singapore but very little.
  • They only have ready to cook coconut food but not ready to eat They stop their e shop during covid.
  • Their coconut drinks have a 45 days shelf live
  • They achieve this by using high pressure processing 450 megapascals - increase price by 35.
  • It is cold pressed so it doesn't destroy nutrients and taste.
  • High heat treatment
  • There’s still active microbes inside
  • Water drink need to be in 4 degree chilled in 45 days
  • They also produce passion fruit and fresh lemon tea drink to boost sales, but the main drink is still coconut.
  • Has 80 hectares 240 000 acres. 1 acres = 1000 coconuts
  • Fried coconut come from by product of the water, the flesh of the coconut.
  • They transfer into high fiber plant based meat to make the coconut strips
  • Why expensive? -> because of the clean label, no added sugar or preservatives
  • Target audience = gym players, mothers, health concerned fitness audience so usually moms would want to feed their children healthy food.
  • Coconut meat: ladies 35 yo and above. 45-50 yrs old for plant based meat
  • Vegan can be interested in trying this coconut meat.

Week 04

We came out with 3 target persona type which are Sport Enthusiast, Mother and Vegan, then we do interview for 3 people in each type. After the interview, we put all the keywords and notes in figma and summary their responses.

STAGE 02 - DEFINE

Week 05

We started our slide for the Task 1 Proposal and we made 3 persona based on all the interviewee.

Week 06

We done and successfully submit the sldie for Task 1 and finish the Emphathy and Define stage.

Task 01 Proposal Slide:

STAGE 03 - IDEATION

Week 07

Dr Wong gave us to play a quick game call "The Crazy 8" to help us come out with some idea for our project. So, basically we need to sketches/write 8 idea for our project in 8 mins sharp. The time limit and the atmosphere will make us more excited to brainstroming out more ideas.

Then we make the POV statements for each persona.

Week 08

We were chosing the interesting idea to present in the mid term presentation, so we came out these ideas:
  • #1 DIY Fun Coconut Jelly Kit box for kids
  • #2 Dissolvable Natural Coconut Energy Powder for drink
  • #3 Coconut Husk Packaging for snacks with cellulose wrapper
  • #4 Coconut tree inspired display stand for selling the snacks
  • #5 Redesign the Website & make fun coconut mascots for kids

#1 - This is the sketch for the DIY ready to make coconut jelly kit for kids and mother as a family interactive products.

#2 - The second idea was a go-to dissolvable natural coconut powder that can be quickly dissolved in drinks especially for sports people.

#3 - This is an idea for a redesigned environmental friendly packaging for Cocokami's new package.  The outer part is the coconut shell and the snacks will wrapped with cellulose natural wrapper. Vegans prefer food with reusable and natural friendly material for packaging. We also have a plantable seed card with qr code which can lead to website and community page for user to share their ideas and recipes.

#4 - This is an extension idea from idea 3 which we design a stand display looks like a coconut tree, when selling the sncaks, customers can take the products they want from the display or maybe can have some sctivities with the display stand to give them a fun experience.

#5 - Lastly, we redesigned a website and make the website look more fun and more educational facts. Besides, we also design a mascot for cocokami in a coconut appeal with leg and hand.

Week 09

We presented the ideas we have to Ms Youle and Dr Wong and we got a lot of feedbacks from them to help to improved our ideas and guide us in the right way.

Feedbacks:
  • Since we did 3 target user interviews, she told us to just focus on 1 target audience since all 3 targets have different needs
  • Our goals are abit too much and too broad
  • We can define a clearer GOAL and only focus on one target user
  • She advised us to just select one or two goals and re-ask the HMW based on that goal
  • Just pick one or 2 ideations for our final prototype

Mid - Term Task 2 Slide PDF

STAGE 04 - PROTOTYPE

Week 10

In week 10, we chose our final prototype direction which is :
  • Make a sub group under Cocokami and focusing on kids named "Cocokreate"
  • DIY make your own coconut choco ball kit box for kids and mothers
  • Makre the website for Cocokreate
We focus on mothers and kits and our goal is to increase the positive bonding between them and educated the kids about the nutrition and fun facts.

COCOKREATE LOGO

Rationale:
  • Expansion of Cocokami's logo, but change the kami to 'kreate' as this is focused on kids
  • The logo links creativity, enjoyment using coconuts
  • Blue splash represents joy, and fun
  • Blue represents friendliness, trust and freshness

DIY BOX KIT PROGRESS

This DIY kit box is me and Anggia did it. After we consult to Dr Wong, she like our idea of the kit surprisingly and she suggest us to do different festival variations, but we pick the final one as the main prototype.

So we came up with 3 variations of the DIY Box Kit:
  1. DIY Choco Coconut Ball kit
  2. DIY Coconut Kuih Bangkit
  3. DIY Coconut Jingle Jelly Kit

I made the design for the packaging of the Chinese New Year and Christmas kit box, and Anggia doing the Choco Coconut ball box which is the main prototype.

DIY BOX #1

The DIY kit for this we will make it physically out for the user testing. Kids and mothers can make choco coconut protein balls together and the ingredients is healthy and no sugar.

DIY BOX #2

This box is more focusing on Christmas edition, and DIY your own Coconut Jelly. I sketches the idea for this Christmas kit, and designing the mascot with a santa hat and wearing a scarf to suit the Christmas Festival.

DIY BOX #3

This box is focus on Chinese New Year edition. The kit is DIY make your own Coconut Kuih Bangkit. I did a sketch for it and design the mascot with a lion dance head set on the coconut mascot.

At first my idea was drawing a dragon dance on the upper part of the box, but it turns out too complicated to make it so I change the dragon dance to the lanterns.

Compilation Mockups

INSIDE THE BOX

Inside the box, we will make a sticker set for the kids of our coconut mascots. Besides, we have a card to explaining a fun competition where kids and mothers can draw a new coconut mascot and send to our Cocokreate and the winner can get their sticker printed, featured and used on the next DIY box kit gifts. Other than that, in the card we have a QR code to our Cocokreate website for more information, educational facts and the community sharing page.

FINAL PHYSICAL BOX PROTOTYPE

We make 2 copies of physical final box packaging of the Coconut Choco Ball and we'll use it as user testing later.

MAKING THE RECIPE AND INGREDIENTS

We try our best to find the suitable recipe for the Choco Coconut Protein Ball where the kids no need to bake or cook and easy to make. So just mix, stir and place in the fridge and this was the challenging part. Mostly the trial is made from Anggia cause our living place is too far with each others, so we just chat online and Anggia mostly do the physical part trial.

Ingredients we used:

Honey, Dessicated Coconut, Coconut Cream powder, Little bits of blended oats, Cocoa Powder, Crushed coconut Biscuits, Water

PACKING THE FINAL BOX

After finsihed set up the portion and ingredients for one box, we started sealing and packing each ingredient one by one and labeling them with an instruction card to be pasted on the box.

FINAL PRESENTATION (Week 15)

We had our final presentation to our clients, the presentation run smoothly and I think my group did well also.

FINAL WORK COMPILATION

Task 1 - Proposal Slides

Task 2 - Mid-Term Slides

Task 1,2,3 Combined - Final Compiled Slides

FEEDBACKS

Week 1: We grouped up with our teammates. We must have different specialisations and at least 6 people in a group. 3 UI/UX members in a group is the max. This is so that there's various specialisation so the project can go smoothly with sharing of different specialties.

Week 2: We were given all the project briefs and my group chose the brief for New Food New Life : Cocokami.

Week 3: We had a 1st meeting with the client to gain more info about cocokami and what its needs and goals are. We also asked the problem they struggle most. Ms Youle (founder of cocokami) said that she is open to anything which help boost Cocokami to more poeple especially as their target audience are: mothers, kids, sports enthusiast and vegans. She said that younger kids look at coconut as something that is old and boring, but they don't know alot about coconuts educational facts and that it contains so much fibre.

Week 4: Dr Wong told us to start preparing our target users and the interview questions int he docs and make a folder in our drive to put the interview responses/recordings and transcripts.

Week 5: We started delegating tasks on which member to interview which target group. We had 3 interviewees for each target group. We had 3 target group to interview: sports, vegans and mothers. Dr wong said we need to include inclusions and exclusions criteria and age range and reason why we chose that.

Week 6: Dr Wong said for our Task 1 Slides, makesure to not copy paste exactly like what we put in our JamBoard. Makesure there's not too much words in one slide and highlight important keypoints only.

Week 7: We submitted the task 1 slides and in class, Dr Wong briefed us on Ideation stage and did Crazy 8 activity as a group to brainstorm ideas for the Prototype stage later on.

Week 8: As a group, we started choosing which idea to propose for week 9 and started on making the slides to show our client during our mid term client presentation. We also showed our proposed ideas in class on screen and Dr Wong said to revise and make a final enhanced Goal and Chosen top priority How Might We statement.

Week 9: We had our mid-term presentation to client. We got alot of feedbacks

Week 10 & 11 : We showed Dr Wong our How might we's and ideas and she said that we can refine and focus on finalising 1 how might we for the mothers & children. We also presented our previous week 9 slides and in class she gave us on the spot feedbacks on what to improve on the slides. However, mostly she said our slides is clean layout, clear but add a design thinking stage diagram since not all of the client know what it is.

Week 12: We discussed the user tasks for user testing with Dr Wong and alos showed her our progress on the DIY box kit and website and she said the idea is good. For the website, makesure to do a mobile version too.

Week 13: We showed her the progress of our prototype for the box, she said we can maybe add sticker pack or plushie toy in the kit so kids would like it more and add labels and sections to the box.

Week 14: holiday

Week 15: During our Final Presentation to client and guest reviewers as well as Dr Wong. Overall, our group turned out that we had done a good job. Most of them said positive feedbacks such as they like our idea of a fun diy kit for the kids, our designs throughout all our prototypes were consistent and the logo is well expanded. Ms Youle also like the name "CocoKreate". Mr Sylvain said that the presentation was delivered well and smoothly too, and not too much text heavy. He just said that our group could have paused and talk more longer on our final prototype designs to give a more "WOW" effect. Rather than just showing alot about the progress they prefer seeing more of the final design outcomes as it attracts them more as an audience. They also said that the mascots were cute and nicely put onto the box and website. Dr Wong said that she also likes the order of our presentation by following the design thinking stages and also showing some clips for the user testings.

REFLECTION

Experience:

Throughout this small project module, I truly experienced the complete design thinking process, especially in the definition phase, where we needed to conduct extensive analysis and use tools like affinity diagrams that were completely new to me. Collaborating with team members from diverse backgrounds (e.g., UI/UX, graphic design, animation) was incredibly enjoyable, helping us bring different ideas and approaches to the final product. Although we encountered some misunderstandings and challenges along the way, we successfully resolved them through communication, teamwork, and reasonable task allocation. In retrospect, this module was indeed challenging, particularly in terms of working with a real client and the responsibilities of each team member. Ultimately, however, I am proud of our team's achievements and grateful for the support of my teammates and the guidance of Dr. Wong.

Observation:

In this project, I realized that user research was crucial to the formation of the final concept. Our initial assumptions about young users changed after conversations with mothers and children, who emphasized the importance of parent-child interaction, education, and trust in healthy ingredients. This prompted us to shift our focus from the product itself to a more holistic experience. Using FigJam as a shared workspace helped us better organize our research, ideas, and timelines, facilitating collaboration and feedback. Working with team members from diverse backgrounds also enhanced the final outcome. Although different perspectives sometimes led to disagreements, these discussions helped us refine our ideas and clarify our direction.

Findings:

I learned that design is not just about creativity, but also about strategy, empathy, and collaboration. The design thinking process helped me understand the importance of thoroughly analyzing user needs before embarking on a solution; and refining our "how might we" statements showed me that a clearer problem definition leads to better results. Furthermore, I gained valuable experience across different design fields, learning how to communicate ideas clearly and handle disagreements constructively. Ultimately, this experience enhanced my research, conceptualization, and experience design skills, while also reminding me that as a project leader, patiently listening to everyone's ideas is crucial, especially in future industry projects.
