MODULE INFORMATION BOOKLET

EXERCISE 01

In exercise 1, we were required to create a character concept design which include the outfit, silhoutte and final art. The character that we design will be use in the upcoming project, that we can’t make any changes to it anymore. Other than that, we need to do a skull sculpting exercise to help us more understanding about the human skull and positions.

Backstory

Selene is the last descendant of a family sworn in blood to protect an ancestral tachi, a
blade imbued with the "Blue Hollow Fire," a relic of the being that once maintained
the balance of yin and yang.

When thieves attempted to steal the tachi, Selene awakened its dormant power and
merged her soul with it, fulfilling her family's duty. This act granted her immense power
but also stripped her of some of her humanity, transforming her into a half-demon
bound to the tachi's will. Despite suffering from the corruption of the Hollow Fire,
Shuyin remains calm and resolute.

Now, she wanders in silence, engaged in an endless battle to suppress the darkness
within and ensure the tachi remains safe from the wrong hands. Beneath her stoic
exterior lies a deep sorrow and a longing for redemption. Her ultimate goal is to find a
way to destroy or seal the tachi forever, even if it means sacrificing herself

Moodboard

I was interesting in the Japanese warrior who using a “katana” weapon, so I find the references images about the design, outfit and posture to gain more inspiration, after the research I decided to make my character in a blue, black and yellow color palettes.

Sketches

After the concept, I started the sketches with different poses.

Outfit Variation

Figure 1.3, Outfit Variation

All this three variations outfit are relevant to Japanese style since I was doing a Japanese warrior. The first and the last one is more towards the Japanese shrine maiden costume and the middle which is the main one is more warrior and battle outfit.

Final Character Art (Dynamic Pose with splash art)

Figure 1.4, Final Character Art

I drew a splash art for the character to show the power when she use her sword. Besides, I also add an extra kind of demon pattern tattoo at her left waist part to represent that she is not purely human anymore.

Character Blocking Stage (Rough Blockout)

After the skull exercise, we need to start working on our charcater sculpting and first we need to create a rough blockout using different subtool for different body part. Then, we apply different colour for each subtool.

Blockout Detail

After the rough blockout, we need to do a detail blockout. It was to refining the character's anatomy and muscle structure and proportions. I decided to redo my blockout since the proportions was weird.

PROJECT 02

Outfit & Props Sculpting

After the anamoty was done, I started to do the outfit and props sculpt with the "Masking" and "Extract tools" .

Bandage

Figure 3.0, Bandage Details

The bandage I mask and extract multiple time to made the overlap effects and apply the cloth materials.

Tatto

Figure 3.1, Tattoo Details

The tattoo I used round and sharp shape to represent the devil logo looks. The sharp shapes create a mystery feels.

Belts

Figure 3.2, Belts Details

I used one main belt and two secondary decorative belts for this character.

Cloak

Figure 3.3, Cloak Details

This cloak is the main cloth for the characer, it's inspired from the japanese tradition costume and I make it into a more convenient for fighting cloak and pair with shorts.

Shorts

Figure 3.4, Shorts Details

I use a simple shorts for the character for more convenient to fight.

Leg Band and Long Boots

Figure 3.5, Leg Band Details

Figure 3.6, Boots Details

Leg bands are used in conjunction with boots. If the character needs to walk in the rain, long boots are more convenient and practical than other shoes.

Devil Horns

Figure 3.7, Devil Horns Details

The devils horns and the mark in the middle of the forehead is to show that character was turn into half devil and half human.

Face and Veins
Figure 3.8, Face and Veins Details

I used blue colour for the character eyes to consistence with the overall character colour. Besides,I also designed bulging veins for the character to represent the pain the character experiences when transforming into a devil.

Weapon (Katana sword)

Figure 3.9, Sword Details

I designed the upper part with a sea wave
pattern for the sword.

FINAL PROJECT

Complete Character Sculpt with Pose

In this final project we need to give the character a posture which suit to the character well. Additionally, I also refined my character to make it more complete.

Concept Art Illustration

Besides the character pose, we also need to create a Illustration with the final pose.

I mainly used plants and animals to design the background to express the character's soft heart, even though she is turning into a half-demon, she has not become evil.

Compilation Project

Lastly, we need to compiled all the project in one power point.

REFLECTION

 Experience

It was a quite difficult module for me at first, since I am not familiar with 3D and Zbrush app. However, it was a fun experience to create my own character from a concept to a 3D sculpture. Although that I faced many challenges, like the incorrect anatomy proportions and muscle structure. But when after I overcome the difficulties, I feel fullfilling to see my final character even that the sculture maybe is not well done or perfectly. Overall,  I'm grateful and appreciate to sir Tuan guidance to help me work in a right way. Since taking this course, I feel more confident using the Zbrush application in future projects.

Observation

When I was sculpting my character, I truely understand that i'm weak in the anatomy proportion. So, it was quite difficult for me to sculpting my anatomy and muscle sturcture. I refers to the anatomy references online to help me with me proportions and learn to sculpt in their way. This allowed me to have a better understanding with the body anatomy, proportions and muscle.

Findings

Throughout this module, I learned that how important is the anatomy proportions and the muscle to a character, without those the character will look weird and not completed. Besides, the anatomy proportions can be very variable depends on the character height, weight and the body shape, even a small details change you will need to change the overall part or redo the part that need to change. Overall, this project is a very valuable experience and I had learn a lot of skills on 3D sculpture and human anatomy.
