LECTURES
Refer to previous
Design Principles Lectures (Task 1)
and
Visual Analysis Lecture (Task 2).
PROCESS WORK
In this task 3, we need to create a artwork based on the idea in task
2 and apply design principles in idea development and final
design.

| Figure 1.0, Chosen Idea Sketch |
The idea I chose from the 3 ideas I came up with in Task 2 was
Idea 2 (F1.0), which was a
seascape with a boat and a lighthouse. I chose this idea because I
felt that this idea was more related to the artwork I chose in Task 1
and this idea reflected the themes of
journey, guidance, and peace. Since the artwork chosen was "Launching the Currach," this idea is
more about the characters after they have launched the currach, they
have gone through a journey or adventure, and now they are on their
way home, they see the lighthouse, and they know that the lighthouse
is a
symbol of direction and safety
to their destination.

Final Artwork

| Figure 1.8,Label of Design Principles |
In this final work (F1.7), the overall creates a Proximity as the elements of the boat, lighthouse, fish, sky and water feel
naturally connected to the unity of the scene. The combination of
different design principles create a visual harmony in this artwork.
For
example, Principle of Balance (F1.8, number 1 red colour) is that the lighthouse is on the left middle but the boat is
on the right lower. Besides, the light from the lighthouse through the
boat, and the shadow of the land and boat create a Principle of Contrast (F1.8, number 2 orange colour) in light and shadow. The Principle of Rule of Thirds (F1.8, number 3 yellow colour) is shown in the lighthouse placed near the left third, the two figures
is near the right third and the horizon is place at the lower last
third.
Additionally, the curved line of the clouds applies the Principle of Repetition (F1.8, number 4 green colour). The Principle of Harmony (F1.8, number 5 indigo colour) is shown in the use of soft colour palettes creating a sense of peace
and unity. After that, the water ripples, the light from the lighthouse
and the flow of the jump fish create the Principle of Movement (F1.8, number 6 purple colour) to guide the viewer's eye look from the lighthouse toward the boat.
Lastly, the Principle of Figure/Ground (F1.8, number 7 blue colour) is shown by the foreground boat, the midground lighthouse and the background
of the sky and horizon.
FEEDBACK
Week 6
General Feedback: Continue on the rationale and write the meaning of the
artwork.
Specific Feedback: Add more shadows on the sea surface on the lighthouse
and the boat, and add the light from the lighthouse through the boat to
guide the viewer's eye and make the outline of the lighthouse lighter and
less obvious.
Week 7
General Feedback: Add more contrast on the light and shadow and put the PDF file in the compilation blog first.
Specific Feedback: More darker for the reflection of stone in the sea, and also the shadow on the stone from the lighthouse. Add a little curved shadow and draw on the stone to highlight the double layer of shadow on the stone. Last, reduce a bit of the light from the lighthouse to the boat.
REFLECTION
Experience:
In this Task 3, we need to create a final artwork based on the 3 idea sketches we've done in Task 2. I chose the second idea (F1.0) sketch as my final idea, and then I started exploring with different colours and tones. Based on the knowledge of design principles we have learnt, I used the similar colour to create colour harmony and used the principle of the Rule of Thirds to create the compositions.
Observation:
Before starting drawing the details of the ideas, I research on the meaning of the lighthouse to the travelers, I found that the lighhouse is a symbol of direction towards destination and safety. For the figures, I found that in Ireland the people who launch the currach is wearing a traditional workwear of Irish fishermen. So, I remain the workwear on the figures to related with the chosen artwork in Task 1.
Findings:
Through this process, I gained a deeper understanding of how visual elements interact to create balance, harmony, movement, and more in an artwork. Overall, this project allowed me to apply design principles in a meaningful way while refining my skills. It also highlighted the importance of visual storytelling, where every element contributes to conveying a theme or deeper meaning.
