OVERALL REFLECTION

Experiences

Throughout the semester, Advanced Typography helped me refine my typography skills based on what I learned in the Typography module and taught me more about the depth of typography. Although I faced many challenges in this module, every time I worked through them, I saw huge improvements on me. Overall, this module was quite time-consuming for me. It often felt like I hadn’t finished one task before the next one was already coming. Mr. Vinod gave us important feedback, which helped me understand where my weak points were and what needed improvement. The most challenging part for me was Task 3, where we had to generate a font. Since we didn’t have much time to work on it, it was quite tough for me. Designing a new font isn’t that easy, you have to keep improving your idea, and sometimes, you might even need to rethink everything halfway through. But once you’ve fully completed the task, you’ll feel a strong sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, knowing that you designed a font entirely on your own.

Observation

I noticed that in typography, especially Advanced Typography, we can’t just create things based only on what we see or already know. We need to do research, find solutions, and look for ways to improve our work. Such as, my Task 3, where we had to generate a completely new font, really pushed me to think deeper. I couldn’t just rely on what looked good. I needed to research type anatomy, spacing, and consistency. It forced me to question my design choices and rethink my direction midway whenever I got overwhelmed by the task. These experiences taught me that good typography comes not only from creativity but also from constant research, evaluation, and improvement.

Findings

In this module, I discovered that type design is much more than visual appeal, it requires strong conceptual thinking, continuous research, and meticulous refinement. Whether it was designing my wordmark "Qinn", making subsidiary mockups, generating fonts in Task 3, or participating in the Honors Contest, each assignment taught me the importance of balancing creativity and functionality. I realized that good typography doesn’t just come from what we already know or have seen, it comes from reflecting on our design, being willing to change, and solving problems in the process. Although the process was challenging and time-consuming, especially when I had to rethink and restart parts of my work, it ultimately helped me grow and gain a deeper appreciation for the craft.
