Experience

Working on this dissertation was challenging but also rewarding. Since this topic was a continuation of my previous research, I felt more confident in my direction, yet the workload and level of analysis were much different. I had to manage large amounts of data and carefully link my findings with existing theories and academic sources. At times, the process felt overwhelming, especially when trying to maintain consistency and searching references to aligned with my findings. However, because the topic was something that I want to talk more about, I stayed motivated throughout the process.

Observation

One key observation from this dissertation was how important passion and persistence are in long-term research. I noticed that continuing with a topic I truly enjoyed made it easier to overcome difficulties and stay focused, even when the process became tiring. I also became more aware of how research develop over time, starting from a simple idea and developing into a more structured and in-depth study. Additionally, this dissertation helped me see the value of emotional engagement as a research perspective, especially from the audience’s point of view, which is often overlooked in academic studies of film music. Overall, this experience not only strengthened my research skills but also shaped how I view music, emotion, and storytelling in animation and film.

Findings

I think having an existing research foundation gave me a clearer direction, but expanding it into a full dissertation pushed me to think more deeply and critically about my analysis. Throughout the process, I learned how instrumental choices can subtly shape emotions and strengthen storytelling, especially within animated films. These differences affect the audience's connection with the characters, scenes, and narrative moments, making the music feel like an invisible guide leading the emotional response. Although it was quite challenge, it was also fullfilling when I finished my research paper.
